Drama Inspired Recipe: Omurice (Omelette Rice)

Omurice is one of those meals that has been seen countless time in tv shows, dramas, manga, and anime. I have made this dish a few times (especially after discovering the delicious pair of rice and egg–who knew?) Today I am writing this particularly as a dish from the drama/manga Kimi Wa Petto (you’re my pet).

Sumire made omurice for Momo

I first discover omurice while watching Terrace House (I can’t remember which one though) where someone wrote coward on the omurice. Omurice (or omuraisu) is an omelette of fried rice wrapped in a thin layer of egg and typically topped with ketchup. The true origins of omurice happened sometime during the 20th century in Tokyo. This delicious dish spread to Taiwan and Korea as well.

The omurice from Terrace House. One of the women wrote ‘coward’ because the man she liked was wavering.

The Ingredients

The ingredients for this recipe was practically all that I have in my house which made it much easier to cook. This dish is yoshoku, which is western influenced Japanese food. That may be the reason why I already have everything on hand (and that I seem to make a lot of Asian dishes in general (some that I don’t even post).

The Cooking

Ah, the omelette, one of the most difficult of egg recipes that I have attempted. I just can’t get it right (you’ll see in the picture). This is a skill that requires much practice and I don’t have it yet. The omurice I made is probably the 4th omelette I have ever made. If you decide to make this, don’t be discourage. Plus, it taste so yummy that you won’t even been bothered by the egg falling apart.

  • 1 1/2 Cup cooked rice
  • olive oil
  • 1/2 onion chopped
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp ketchup more for serving
  • 1 C Frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • salt
  • pepper

  • Heat non-stick pan over medium heat. Add oil when hot.
  • Add rice, onion, soy sauce, ketchup, vegetables and sesame oil, salt and pepper.
  • Cook and stir until vegetable are cooked and flavors are mixed well into rice.
  • While the fried rice is cooking, place two eggs into a dish. Stir until mixed well.
  • When the rice is done, transfer to another dish. Clean pan; return to stove and heat on medium low.
  • Add oil. When heated pour the mixed egg inside. Spread evenly around the pan and let cook.
  • Once cook, place some fried rice in the middle and the fold the ends into the middle. Remove from pan and place the folded part down on the plate.
  • Decorate with ketchup.

Notes

You will need more eggs if you make more than one serving. Two eggs per serving, less if you are making this for children (which they will love). Also there will be a lot of rice left over, so you can make more or just eat the rice, which is delicious too.

Thoughts

A relatively easy dish (beside the omeletting of it all). I had always been curious as to how to make this dish. Now that I made it and ate it. I love it. My husband loves it (mainly the rice though) and my kids love it. So it’s a win.

Here’s my sad, but delicious results.
