Learning About Culture: Jinn Season 1

Jinn is a 2019 Nexflix Jordanian drama. As far as culture goes, this drama doesn’t have very many things.

Nabateans

In the drama, the class took a trip to visit the Petra. There was a guide that discussed the Nabateans. The Nabateans were continually mentioned throughout the drama. I have never heard about them beforehand and so I had to find out more.

The Nabateans were nomadic arabs who main settlement was in Petra. They roamed the Arabic desert in order to find pastures and water for their herds. Dushara is the supreme deity of the Nabateans. They spoke a form of Arabic, but their written language was more Aramaic with Arabic influences. Petra was built rapidly in the 1st century with a population rising to an estimated 20,000 and the Nabatean Kingdom lasted until aboutthe 5th century. Arab invaders (Qahtanite, Ghassanid, Himyarite, and the kindah) divided the land and left the Nabateans as peasants.

Bedouin

When Keras came to attend the school pretending to be Layla’s cousin, they said that he was a Bedouin cousin. I’m wasn’t exactly sure what a Bedouin was, so I learned a lot. A Bedouin the word to describe any nomadic Arab in the desert. The Nabateans, from above, is an example of Bedouin. My question is, do schools let Bedouins attend temporarily while they are in their city? Also I thought this was a private school. How come Yassin’s family struggles to pay tuition while Keras can come and go as he pleases.

Here’s a documentary of the bedouin.
