Book Inspired Recipe: Reuben’s Beef Ribs, Potato Salad, and Fried Okra

In the third chapter of The Hate U Give, Starr’s dad asks Starr and Starr’s friend, Kenya, to goes to the restaurant next door to order them some food. Her dad asks for some beef ribs, potato salad and okra.

Finally, something American. I don’t often cook traditionally American food. Besides venturing into Asian cuisine, I typically eat some healthy hipster food (how I like to call it).

I feel like as far as recipes go (and practically everything else), I am more of curator rather than a creator. I feel like there are already many really good things out there to eat and so why do I need to create something new. I have created some recipes in the past and that’s only because the recipes didn’t fit what I needed.

The meal inspired from this book are recipes created by another blogger at Divas Can Cook. I’m going to be honest and say that southern food is not my specialty and I really wanted to keep the recipes as basic as possible.

Cooking the Food

Ribs

For the beef ribs recipe, you can find it here. I marinaded the ribs for over 24 hours. Mainly because I didn’t have the time to cook them any sooner. I also had caked on seasonings which made the ribs extra delicious. I don’t think I needed the BBQ sauce, but I added some anyways…still delicious.

Potato Salad

I’m going to agree with Starr here and say that potato salad is the devil’s food. I don’t care for potato salad, but I decided to make some anyways for the sake of this blog. The only reason I ate it was because I made it. I don’t even know why I don’t like potato salad. It is just one of those foods that are eaten to prevent starvation or death from hunger, I think. Anyways, I got the recipe from the same website. The only difference I made was adding celery salt because my brother walked in the kitchen while I was preparing it. He tasted and told me to add some. Don’t ask me how much to added, I just sprinkled it in.

Fried Okra

Fried okra is my absolutely favorite. Here we have three major fried chicken restaurant chains: KFC, Popeye’s, and Church’s. The main and only reason I choose Church’s above all the others is fried okra. It’s truly delicious. In order to make the fried okra I cut corners. I store-bought frozen breaded okra. Look hear me out, okay? I have attempted making my own breaded okra which then ends up in disaster. I can not for reasons beyond my knowledge correctly bread the okra. For certain, I think it comes from my impatience with cooking okra. By the time I start cooking it, I already want to eat it. Thus, store-bought.

It’s really easy if you do it this way. Heat oil in a pan and then add drop some okra in it. Let it fry, scoop it up with a slotted spoon and let it rest on paper towels. The bad part about it was I kept eating it and almost didn’t have anything left to take a picture.

There. You now have a complete meal ready to be devour.
