Booklist: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

The Book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a book that is comprised of letters written between Juliet Ashton and the many people she writes to. The book wouldn’t be a story of a literary club without the mention of books its members have read. The list that I created consists of 10 different books. But the story contains some fictional works and some that I decided not to include. There are 10 books that I choose to write about.

Jane Eyre

The Bronte sisters (Charlotte, Anne, and Emily) are popular authors in this bok. Tis particulary book was written by Charlotte Bronte in 1847. It was originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography. The story starts when Jane is 10 years old and continues up until she is married.

Agnes Grey

This is another story written by a bronte sister, Anne (the youngest and lesser known sister). The book was also published in 1847. The story is about the life of the governess, Agnes Grey.

Villete

This book was written by Charlotte Bronte in 1853. Lucy Snowe travels to a French town, Villete, where she teaches at a girl’s speaking school.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

Written by Anne Bronte and published in 1848. It was Anne’s second novel and also her last. The novel is written as a series of letters (sound familiar??) from Gilbert Markham to his friend and brother-in-law about the events that connects with the meeting of his wife. This novel may be considered as one of the first feminist novels.

Selections from Shakespeare

Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor. There are several collections of is work, so it is difficult to pinpoint one book. His work was written between 1589 and 1613.

Gone with the Wind

Gone with the Wind is an American novel written by Margaret Mitchell and published in 1936. The story is set in Georgia, United States. It’s another historical fiction that takes place during the American Civil War and Reconstruction Era. It depicts the struggles of a young and spoiled Scarlett O’Hara who does everything she must to get out of poverty.

The beginner’s Cookbook for Girl Guides

I couldn’t exactly find this book, but I was able to find a book that is similar.

Pride and Prejudice

Written by English author Jane Austen in 1813. It is a romance novel about Elizabeth Bennett who learns about making hasty judgements, particularly towards Mr. Darcy.

The Catebury Tales (The Parson’s Tale)

Originally written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387-1400. It is a collection of 24 stories.

The Sir Roger de Coverly

A story written by Addison and Steele in the 18th century readers magazine, Spectator. It’s about a baronet named Sir Roger de Coverly (which I learned is also a dance).

Other books mentioned (that are real):
Oxford Book of Modern Verse 1892-1935
The Letters of Seneca translated from latin
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

I’ve only read Pride and Prejudice. Have you read any of these?
