Monthly Adventure: Let’s Play Yatzy

In an episode of Rita, we see her daughter, Molly, playing Yatzy with Lillibeth, her grandma. At first I wasn’t aware it was Yatzy until later on when Molly is playing the same game alone.

I’m going to be honest. I’ve played Yahtzee before so this isn’t exactly an adventure. It is practically the same game, right? Why are they the same thing, but with different spellings?

Yatzy

Yatzy is a game that can be played alone or with any number of people. It is a dice game that is similar to other dice games, including the game Yahtzee that I mention above. In order to play the game, you take turns rolling 5 dice. the player decides what to keep and what to reroll. The player may get up to two rerolls per turn. On each turn a player has to score or put a zero into a box. The player with the highest score is the winner.

I read that there are differences between Yazty and the American version. I like how Yatzy totaling system is simple, just add up the dice. But Yahtzee is a requires more effort because the points are different depending on what you roll.

Let’s Get it Started

I pull out the Yahtzee game from the closet and I decide to play alone. And of course, my children had lost the dice. Maybe. At some point, my son loved playing with the dice and I hid the dice from him. So I may be the culprit in the case of the missing dice. I commence a solitary search party in all my familiar hiding spots around the house. I found them.

Let’s Really Get it Started

In order to play Yatzy instead of Yahtzee, I looked online to see the difference. Yatzy has players add up the sum of the dice to score point (which in my opinion is the more logical choice). There is also two more things added that are difference which is one pair and two pair.

The thing I like most about Yahtzee is that all you really need are dice, a notepad, and knowledge of how the game is played. Since I am often short on time (more recently since I’m working full-time), I play the game quickly. I thought playing the game by myself would be lame, but it really is kind of fun even alone. I decided to play Yatzy instead of Yahtzee, so I had to add one pair and two pair on the notepad (which by the way I forgot about).

In the end, my score was so low that I don’t want to talk about it. hahaha! For some reason I felt compelled to get a small straight (1-2-3-4-5), so I spent all my time doing that. And for some reason, I could not get a 4!! Why does the number 4 hate me!?! Even in the upper section, I could not get a 4!! I think the only four I got was in my large straight (2-3-4-5-6). Blast you 4!
