Good Morning Kiss Manga Review (First 4 Volumes)

After watching the drama Good Morning Call on Netflix and then reading the manga. I sincerely thought that was all there was and there wasn’t any more to the story. When I heard that Netflix planned to make a second season, I thought it was going to be all the creative genius of the adaptive writers. I was wrong. It turns out there is also a second manga series to the story called Good Morning Kiss. The following is my review.

Good Morning Kiss by Yue Takasuka
Published by: Sheuisha
Genre: shoujo, romantic-comedy, slice of life
Run: May 2007- Present
Volumes: 10

Synopsis

It has been for years since we last saw the couple. Good Morning Call left off with Uehara and Nao moving in next to each other. They are now college students that are faced with a different set of problems.

Review

I like the consistency that the author keeps, but at the same time it feels as though the characters haven’t growth. Four years have past but they are still the same. Nao still panics over petty things because she’s overthinking. Uehara still struggles with communicating with Nao his thoughts and problems. I’m excited to see them grow up.

The story starts off a little slow, but quickly becomes engaging (and partially predictable–but I kind of like that). I dislike the lack of character growth and it was also less romantic that Good Morning Call (that’s adult-life for you when you have too many responsibilities).

Marina and Mi-chan are still together, but Mi-chan attends a far away college. The couple struggle with their long distance relationship. Issei is still working with his dad and they opened a second location. Abe may finally get a girlfriend. Everything still unknown for me right now. Four volumes don’t give too much especially since the story was just warming up.

It has a lot of the same characters: Issei, Marina, Abe, Yuri, but It also has a lot of new characters like Ota.

The Best

I get the see the drama between Marina and Mi-chan. I hope they stay together, but it’s nice they have authentic problems and they are struggling.

The Worst

After so many years, Nao and Uehara are pretty much the same. It seems like they are just starting to grow up though.

Afterthoughts/Recomendations

I love the direction the author was writing the story. There was various situations happening that I’m excited to see what happens next.

Best Quotes

“There’ll be no grief if you’re prepared.” Nao to Uehara when she bought something unnecessary.

“There are still some things in this world that you cannot achieve no matter how hard you work.”

Favorite Scenes

*This is a reminder when reading manga read right to left.

The Kimono

I love this one because Nao and Uehara are about to connect, but they have a little problem.

Presents

This scene is funny. Nao is upset because Uehara didn’t get her a Christmas present, but they’ve been together for four years and had never gotten presents for each other, so that was the expectation. This was another scene caused by a lack of communication.

Granny helping

Once again Uehara has to be hospitalized for exhaustion. The landlord comes to pick him up and when she tries to help him this happens:
