Book Inspired Craft: Gardenia Bookmark

In the book A White Rose by Amy Ephron, she mentions several flowers as a way to describe the city of Havana and the many other places in the story. One of those flowers is a gardenia. I had never heard of a gardenia before reading about this book and I thought it would be cool to make one out of paper. I mistakenly created this paper gardenia bookmark, but the results were worth the discovery.

Choosing the Gardenia

A gardenia is a beautiful white flower found growing on a bush. I chose this flower from the others in the book because it stuck to me. Gardenia is a flower that I haven’t heard much about. This may be the first time coming across this flower.

Similar to what I wrote on the poem, A White Rose, gardenias also have a meaning. The gardenia is the flower that you give to someone that you know, but you don’t want then to know who you are (source). It’s something that a secret admirer would give.

Creating the Flower

I have a lack of ability in the paper creation craft area, so I wasn’t able to create my flowers on my own. But I encounter a website (and there are plenty) where I was able to find a template to make one. Here. The creator used special paper, but I decided to use what I had: cardstock. For the other items, I decided to go to the dollar tree to buy them. I found the floral tape, floral wire, and wire cutters. Score. $3. Yay!

Creates 6 flowers

Materials:

Cardstock (6 white, 2 green)
Printers with ink
Scissors
Hot glue (any glue might do though)
Floral Wire (or a green popsicle stick or a green ribbon or just get creative with the stem)
Wire Cutters

Directions:

  1. Go to this link, place the white cardstock in the printer and print the 1st page of the document on that page. Be sure to start cutting while the other papers are printing (saves time).
  2. Play the green papers in the printer and print the 2nd page.
  3. Cut it all out (it’s so torturous).
  4. Follow the instruction on the page. I don’t want to write the steps out and confuse you, so it’s best to follow the other page while creating the flower. Come back after you glue on the leaves.
  5.  Welcome back. So the next step depends on how creative you are deciding to get with your book mark. Since I already bought the floral wire, I followed the step on the other page to create my stem. But if you are doing your own thing, you will have to try your thing and see if it works. Comment below with a picture (can you add pictures in the comments?) or email me. I would love to see them. If I get enough, I will create a separate post sharing your hardwork.
  6.  You are done. Pat yourself on the back. Share your picture.

Thank you for stopping by! Please share what you create!
